Scott MacKay - Half of Everything
It's Valentine's Day this week, so what better time to have on the blog a song about divorce? Our timing is always impeccable.
"Half of Everything" by Canadian singer-songwriter Scott MacKay is a country-inflected song that takes the idea of splitting everything 50/50 after a romantic split, and taking it to its most logical, ridiculous conclusion. The song's got a classic singer-songwriter county feel to it, sounding something a bit like Jake Bugg, if he had a sense of humour.
"Half of Everything" is out now.

Dirt Farmers - Alibi For The Silent Guy
A second trip to Melbourne in the space of a day? Why not?
Australian 5-piece Dirt Farmer are a blues country-rock band with a penchant for the sound of 60s and 70s Los Angeles. Their latest single is "Alibi For The Silent Guy", a song which sounds quite a bit like Alabama Shakes both in terms of their overall sound, and also in their vocal similarities (despite the gender flip). It's also got a pretty wonderful saxophone interlude, which has more than a little Clarence Clemons to it. You've got to love a band who make much which sounds so timeless.
"Alibi For The Silent Guy" is taken from their début album "Free BBQ", which is out now.

Southern - Where I Want To Be
But back to the present, for the duo have just announced the release of their brand new single, "Where I Want To Be". The song follows on quite well from the lead track from their last E.P, with its bluesy yet muscular guitar riffs and intertwining vocals from the Southern siblings. There's shades of the Rolling Stones and "Riot City Blues"-era Primal Scream in there, and is a great demonstration of the band's heavy face (we're informed that the song's b-side, "The Way You Breathe", is a demonstration of the band's softer, croonier side, like "Oh Won't You Go" from the last E.P, but as that song has yet to be made public, we cannot confirm nor deny that this is indeed the case).
On a "thinking to myself out loud notes", one wonders whether the band will continue to record under the name Southern in the future. Even though they have built a profile for themselves, one can only imagine that their name might cause them problems in the future due to the chance of other artists using a similar name, or due to their name not being the easiest to Google (they're nowhere to be found when typing "southern" into the site, although admittedly they're the top search for "southern band"). If they were to change their name, I imagine The Southern Siblings could work, as it keeps the Southern part whilst rolling well off the tongue, although they would have some unfortunate abbreviation if they did. Or maybe they don't need to change anything, what do I know? They've done this well without needing to change much.
"Where I Want To Be" will be released on August 18th.

The Jepettos ft Tabitha Agnew - Orchard
The Jepettos sure love a good old collaboration, don't they? Less than a year after collaborating with Alana Henderson and Scott Jamison on "Water", the Derry duo have teamed up with 15-year old Tabitha Agnew on their new single, "Orchard". Tabitha is a member of bluegrass trio Cup O' Joe (who despite their name, hail from Armagh), and plays the banjo and takes lead vocals on the track, adding a country flavour to The Jepettos' traditional 'lullaby folk' archetype. Country-ish music is currently enjoying its best press in years, thanks in no small part to Avicii, and recently evidenced when The Common Linnets got a surprise top 10 hit this week, so hopefully "Orchard" will be warmly welcomed in many quarters.
"Orchard" is available to download now for a reasonable price.
