The DŁX - Let Go

There were a few songs that we came across over the past few months that we loved, but didn't get around to posting due to our own semi hiatus-y state, so it's time to get around to doing just that now that we're ramping things up again.

Hailing from Mississippi, The DŁX are a trio who describe themselves as making 'off-the-wall pop' music. They released their debut single "Let Go" a few months, and if it they ever find the mathematical equation for fitting as many good vibes into a 4-minute pop song, "Let Go" will probably be used as its benchmark. Its group vocals and somewhat sunny disposition call to mind a scaled down version of The Polyphonic Spree. It might come off as a bit saccharine for some tastes, but we've never been ones to shy away from the twee, and who in their right mind could say no to a song that uses the ukulele as its base?

Sharliza Jelita - Breaks My Heart in Two

Don't you just love unrequited love? One such person who does is Sharliza Jelita, who wrote "Breaks My Heart In Two" about her crush on the Duke of Downbeat himself, Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

In comparison to the dizzy-pop sound heard on her last single, "No Go Pogo", "Breaks My Heart in Two" is an afro-beat inspired piece of subdued infatuation-pop, whose dark heart is hidden by the overall loveliness of Sharliza.

"Breaks My Heart In Two" is available as a free download to commemorate Thom Yorke's birthday, and will feature of Sharliza Jelita's album "Strange Things", out in February next year.

Perfect Little Circles - The Organ Song

Sunderland based trio Perfect Little Circles are the self-styled purveyors of 'simple, catchy sweet and sour pop.' They are releasing their debut E.P on 12th September (which curiously enough, is also called "September"), and taken from it is the lovely "Organ Song."

"The Organ Song" (so called due to the synthesized organ sound that overwhelms the song) is a finely crafted indie song, that features harmony vocals that call to mind the Gerard Love-penned songs of Teenage Fanclub, mixed with a playful, lo-fi production aesthetic.

"September E.P" will be released on September 12th on Tiny Lights Recordings.

Team Genius - Love and Love Songs

I can already hear the various denizens of the Metaphorical Boat saying "what's that, Mr. McBride? ANOTHER song about not writing a song? Don't you realize that we've had to suffer through songs by Sara Bareilles and Weezer on that very same subject in the past few years?" Well fear not, music fans, for this song by Brooklyn septet Team Genius is very, very good indeed.

Very nearly bordering on twee, "Love and Love Songs" has echoes of the softer electro-rock moments of LCD Soundsystem, as well as sounding like a more reserved version of Los Campesinos! It also features one of the best examples of start/stop drums this side of "Release the Bees" by Not Squares.

"Love and Love Songs" by Team Genius will feature on their "Pop Songs E.P", and is available to download for free now, courtesy of Paper Garden Records (a label who seem unable to do any wrong at the moment).

Glow & the Forest - Pop Song

Not many artists can name drop KFC in a song and get away with it. Thankfully, Japanese based trio Glow & the Forest are not many artists.

Their self-knowing "Pop Song" manages to stretch the boundaries of lo-fi twee to whole new levels, and is very infectious, in a good way.
